Yosakoi: A Modern Shop Design by Michihiro Matsuo

A Unique Blend of Japanese Elements and Modern Architecture

Yosakoi stands out with its modern and sophisticated interior, showcasing a seamless blend of traditional Japanese elements and contemporary design. The factory area, devoid of large windows, contrasts with the store, which features a spacious opening that overlooks the interior. The design aims to guide customers and create a balanced aesthetic by incorporating a solid accent wall at the center.

To ensure the building's durability and heat insulation performance, Matsuo opted for a wooden structure, a common choice in Japan. However, the complex spatial composition posed a challenge in terms of structural strength. Through meticulous structural analysis and the use of large-section laminated wood and metal joints, Matsuo successfully constructed a safe and sturdy building that meets the country's stringent earthquake standards.

Yosakoi's specifications include a site area of 277.51 square meters and a two-floor structure with a total size of 242.89 square meters. The emphasis on a low-carbon society led to the adoption of a wooden structure, which was carefully analyzed to provide a large opening without compromising the building's integrity.

The interaction within Yosakoi is carefully curated to enhance the overall experience. The main living space, located on the third floor, appears to float in the air, while daily activities take place on the ground level. Strategically placed trees and the surrounding architecture guide the gaze of passers-by, creating an engaging visual experience. The top-floor living room offers unobstructed views through its glass-covered side, reflecting the surface of the water below and ensuring privacy and a sense of tranquility.

Yosakoi was completed in February 2023 in Osaka, Japan. Throughout the design process, Matsuo conducted extensive research on the impact of open stores compared to closed ones, regularly surveying visitors to gather insights. Overcoming the challenge of creating an open design while maintaining energy efficiency and structural strength in the face of frequent earthquakes in Japan was a significant accomplishment.

Michihiro Matsuo, the mastermind behind Yosakoi, is an award-winning architect known for his innovative and practical designs. Yosakoi was honored with the Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating best practices and technical excellence to contribute to a better world.
